2018 Michigan PGA Spring Meeting & Education Seminar

The Section held its Spring Meeting on Monday, March 26 with over 200 members and apprentices in attendance. President Kevin McKinley welcomed everyone to Eagle Eye Golf Club, and welcomed special guests Chris Coffman, The Ally Challenge, Hannah Davis, Folds of Honor Scholarship Recipient, Kim Shafer, Regional Sales Manager-PGA Jr. League, Todd Smith, PGA Career Services Consultant, Alex Wassom, who sang the national anthem, the Honor Guard from VFW Post 7309 in Mason, Michigan and all Past Presidents in attendance.

After the ceremony from the Honor Guard, Mr. Wassom sang a wonderful rendition of our national anthem. Raquel Bryant then delivered the invocation and remembered deceased Members Curtis George, Stan Jawor and Larry Tomasino.

President McKinley apprised the Membership on the Strategic Plan and some of the already finalized goals and objectives. He explained that not all committee chairs are board members, but an officer or board member sits on each committee to report back to the board. Committee chairs were picked based on the best leader to make change for that committee. He also disclosed to the membership that District 5 Director John Lindert is one of four candidates running for National Secretary.

Vice President Bob Bales, along with Executive Director Kevin Helm, reviewed the Section’s investments as well as year-end financials.

Secretary John Pershern acknowledged and welcomed new members and quarter century members. He also congratulated Michigan Golf Hall of Fame inductee Tom Harding.

PGA Career Consultant Todd Smith introduced himself and reviewed a brief PowerPoint presentation. He urged the membership to complete the 2018 Compensation Survey by March 31.

PGA Jr. League Regional Manager Kim Shafer also introduced herself and reviewed exciting new items for 2018.

The meeting then went into a town hall format with President McKinley introducing Folds of Honor Scholarship recipient Hannah Davis, who gave a poignant speech and thanked PGA members for their continued support of the organization.

Tournament Chair Ian Ziska, along with Jim Deiters, Jason Guss and Cody Haughton, talked about what playing in events means to them.

Growth of the Game Chair Stephanie Jennings then recognized the Junior Grant Program of the Year Award to Pam Phipps and Adult Grant Program of the

Adult Grant of the Year Award recipient Brian Kotowicz, PGA

Year Award to Brian Kotowicz. Along with Kotowicz and Phipps, they were joined by Andre Pillow and Kelly Sivier talking about various best practices, etc. regarding junior programs and how they tailor their respective programs to their participants.

The last portion of the town hall featured District 5 Director John Lindert and National Secretary Candidate, along with Jim Dewling, Andre Pillow and Mike Rey, talking about their own experiences as it relates to governance and leadership.

About 53 invited guests had Lunch with the President, an inspiring presentation by President McKinley who discussed the benefits of leadership, leadership opportunities and how to be an all-star board member.

The afternoon education portion featured Dawes Marlatt, PGA Master Professional, Senior Director for Education and Organizational Development at PGA of America, and Todd Sammons, Director, Member Education at PGA of America, who talked about ideas and the new direction within the PGA of America’s Education Department. A large part of the seminar had attendees participate in PGA Business Management Simulations that delivered real world scenarios aligned with a primary focus on improving marketing, sales, leadership, revenue management and financial management at a golf facility.

Michigan PGA Spring Meeting/Teaching Summit Well Attended!

East Lansing,  MI – The Section held its Spring Meeting on Monday, March 27 with over 320 members and apprentices in attendance. President Ron Osborne welcomed everyone to Eagle Eye Golf Club. He also welcomed special guests John Allen, Legal Counsel, Pete Bevacqua, CEO PGA of America, Duane Bucklin, Tiffany, Marlee & Myles Eckert, Folds of Honor, Frank Chieppa, PGA, Player Development Regional Manager, David Graham, GAM, Tim Marks, PGA Employment Consultant, Sabrina Potterpin, and all Past Presidents in attendance. Jim Dewling delivered the invocation and remembered deceased Honorary Member Dr. Lowell LeClair.

After Ms. Potterpin sang a wonderful rendition of our national anthem, Chief Executive Officer Pete Bevacqua provided updates on National activities. With Executive Director Kevin Helm being the facilitator, Pete, along with President Ron Osborne and District 5 Director John Lindert, fielded questions from the membership in a town hall session for the remainder of the morning session.

After a short break, Honorary President Doug White oversaw a candidate’s forum with John Pershern and Wally Sierakowski talking about their desire to run for the office of Secretary.

Business discussions included information from PGA Employment Consultant Tim Marks, Growth of the Game Chair Joe Simpson and Tournament Chair John Seltzer. Special Awards Chair Doug Kreis announced the 2017 Special Awards winners. David Graham from the Golf Association of Michigan talked about the Youth on Course Program whereby juniors can play golf at participating courses for $5.00 or less.

As part of the Patriot Golf Day report, Chair Kevin McKinley introduced Tiffany Eckert, who each gave an emotional speech and thanked PGA members for their continued support of the organization. Duane Bucklin awarded the top Michigan performers an official Brock Bucklin Challenge coin.

The 5th Michigan PGA Teaching & Coaching Summit began Monday afternoon which featured Jim Hackenberg, PGA, from Orange Whip, and also Mark Blackburn, PGA, founder of Blackburn Golf, and authorized Instructor of The Golfing Machine spoke about “Critical Thinking/Coaching”. Daniel Wolocko, Director of Mercy Elite Sports Performance & Therapy, talked about “Training Lateral vs. Vertical Power”.

Tuesday featured Jason Sutton, PGA, Director of Instruction at the prestigious Carmel Country Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, on the “Evolution of Teaching”, along with Jason Carbone, PGA, Director of Instruction at Baltusrol Golf Club, in “What I’ve Learned from the Best”.

The afternoon also featured discussion by leading Michigan Section teachers Jason Guss, Brandon Roby and Kelly Sivier. The discussion was moderated by Charley Vandenberg.

Approximately 140 members and apprentices attended the 1 ½ day Summit.

Growth of the Game Chair Joe Simpson then recognized the Growth of the Game Committee, and introduced new staff member Chelsea Guoynes. Panelists Frank Chieppa, Stephanie Jennings and Glenn Pulice then spoke about the goals of the Committee: Strategic Plan that includes Golf in Schools, Females, Minorities and Millennials. Frank then talked about PGA Junior League, DCP, Get Golf Ready.

Dan McGuire of BlueGolf gave a brief overview of the new tournament software. He also talked about the new app which will feature a Member Directory that you can search by Member Name or Facility and see all members at the facility.

The last portion of the town hall featured Incoming District 5 Director John Lindert updating the membership on National activities, and President Osborne, Vice President McKinley, Secretary Bales and Past President Doug White each talking about their own experiences as it related to serving as an Officer and Board Member.

The afternoon education portion featured Mike Connaway, noted author, speaker and ‘coach’ who trains and motivates athletes, entrepreneurs and business leaders, to maximize their potential. Mike spoke about team building, having a world class mindset, and defeating self-sabotage – great for golf, business and everyday life

The second portion of the afternoon Tim Marks and John Allen focused on the components of a legally binding employment contract and how PGA professionals can put a contract in place and use it to their advantage.

Michigan PGA Spring Meeting/Teaching & Coaching Summit Well Attended

East Lansing, MI -The Section held its Spring Meeting on Monday, March 23 with over 280 members and apprentices in attendance. President Doug White welcomed everyone to Eagle Eye Golf Club. He also welcomed special guests Paul Levy, PGA, Vice President, Frank Chieppa, PGA, Player Development Regional Mgr, Tim Marks, PGA, Employment Services Consultant, Tiffany Eckert, Patriot Golf Day, and all Past Presidents in attendance. Jim Dewling delivered the invocation and remembered deceased members Jeff Sanborn and Tom Talkington.

Vice President Ron Osborne, along with Executive Director Kevin Helm, reviewed the Section’s investments as well as year-end financials.

Secretary Kevin McKinley explained the MSR requirements needed by June 15, 2015, and acknowledged and welcomed new members and quarter century members. He also congratulated Michigan Golf Hall of Fame inductees Scott Hebert and Dave Kendall.

President White and Secretary McKinley oversaw a candidate’s forum with Bob Bales talking about his desire to run for Secretary, and John Lindert for District 5 Director, respectively.

Business discussions included chapter/committee reports, as well as information from

PGA Employment Consultant Tim Marks who gave a brief statistical overview of consultations and resume critiquing he gave through the winter with Section Members. He also urged those that have not completed the compensation survey to do so.

Frank Chieppa, PGA of America Player Development Regional Manager, talked about Growing the Game of Golf through strategic initiatives and National programming.

PGA Vice President Paul Levy talked about the PGA’s long term strategic plan and mission statement which is to serve the Members and Grow the Game. He emphasized the initiatives of the plan: Employment, Education, Properties, Player Development, PGA Reach, Sections, Championships and Global Leadership.

Special Awards Chair Doug Kreis presented the 2015 Special Awards winners in attendance their plaques. TaylorMade Sales Rep Tracy Withey was on hand to present the Assistant Professional of the Year Award to Kyle Horton.

As part of the Patriot Golf Day report, Chair Kevin McKinley introduced Tiffany Eckert, whose son Myles found $20 in a parking lot and gave it to a soldier that reminded him of his deceased father.

In conjunction with the Spring Meeting the 2015 Michigan PGA Teaching & Coaching Summit took place. We had over 150 Michigan PGA Members attend the Summit over the two days.

On Monday afternoon the Summit featured Dennis Sales and Jon Sinclair. Jon Sinclair is the owner and lead instructor at Sinclair’s Golf Training Center in Euless, TX. Dennis has been a golf coach for 13 years. He owned his own academy in Rhode Island before moving to Texas to become a coach at Sinclair’s Training Center.

Jon talked about different technology including 3D swing analysis and Trackman and how to integrate those components into your client’s games. Dennis spoke about the juniors that he coaches and what he is currently working on with them.

On Tuesday the Summit’s featured presenter Michael Breed spoke. Michael was the 2012 PGA of America National Teacher of the Year and current host of The Golf Fix on the Golf Channel. Michael’s recent announcement of the opening of the Michael Breed Golf Academy at Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point is the latest highlight of one of the world’s premier golf instructors.

Michael delivered a very passionate and motivational presentation that not only talked about some of his teaching philosophies and beliefs but shared some of his personal stories and practices that that has helped get him to where he is today.

Michael Johnson, the Senior Equipment Editor from Golf Digest, spoke on Tuesday afternoon and provided some nice insight on the process that goes into the annual Golf Digest Hot List.

James Ridyard, a leading golf instructor, researcher and co-owner of Short Game Secrets was the final presenter on Tuesday afternoon. James has spent a lot of time working with elite players and shared some of the insight on what he is working with them on in regards to the short game and wedge play.

Nominations are currently being accepted for an officer position. Candidates nominated and seconded ten (10) days prior to the Spring Meeting will be included in the Forum. Candidates nominated and seconded after this date will still be allowed to run but not be included in the Forum. Officer elections will take place at the October 26 Fall Meeting. District 5 Director
Every nine years, Michigan has the opportunity to choose a District Director to represent the Michigan, Northern Ohio and Southern Ohio Sections. The Directors’ roles are as representatives, policy maker, planner and supporter, with a primary interest in the satisfaction of the members. The District Director is elected one (1) year in advance, then will serve a three (3) year term, and will also sit on the PGA of America and Michigan Section Board of Directors. As such, nominations are also being accepted for District 5 Director.

Candidates nominated and seconded ten (10) days prior to the Spring Meeting will be included in the Forum. Candidates nominated and seconded after this date will still be allowed to run but not be included in the Forum. The election will also take place at the October 26 Fall Meeting. Michael Breed will be presenting on Tuesday from 8:30 am – 1:30 pm.  Michael’s recent announcement of the opening of the Michael Breed Golf Academy at Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point is the latest highlight of one of the world’s premier golf instructors.  Jon Sinclair opened Sinclair’s Golf Training Center in 2008 to fulfil his goal of having one of the most technologically advanced training centers in the United States.

 Dennis Sales joins Sinclair’s Golf Training Center at Texas Star as one of the top up-and-coming golf instructors in the United States. He has been consistently recognized among the best in New England, where he taught until recently moving to Texas. His success can be traced back to his roots growing up in Cumberland, Rhode Island where he started developing a keen eye for detail and the understanding of how to build athletic skills from his time competing as an athlete himself.

Also presenting on Tuesday is Mike Johnson. Mike is a Senior Equipment Editor for Golf Digest. Mike will talk about what goes into the process of determining the Golf Digest Hot List of Equipment.

Mike Johnson has been with Golf World/Golf Digest since 2002 and currently serves as the magazine’s Senior Editor, Equipment. He has been with the company since 1996.

Mr. Johnson’s areas of expertise include golf equipment and technology, with a particular emphasis on the equipment and equipment trends on golf’s professional tours. In addition, Mr. Johnson covers several golf tournaments each year for the magazine, is one of the judges for Golf Digest’s annual Hot List equipment ranking. He appears regularly on Golf Channel’s “Morning Drive” program and co-hosts an annual Equipment Special on NBC. His work also has appeared in several books, including “Chicken Soup for the Golfer’s Soul.”

Your registration fee includes lunch both days, refreshments throughout the day, continental breakfast on Tuesday, and a cocktail party during an interactive segment from 5:00pm – 6:00pm on Monday. PGA members will also have the opportunity to earn up to (13) MSR hours with attendance both days; (5) Monday and (8) Tuesday. 

Michigan Section PGA Members, Apprentices, PGM Students: $140 – both days, $55 – Monday only, $100 for Tuesday only. The entry deadline is Friday, March 20th at 5:00pm. Registrations after the deadline will be accepted based on availability.

Spring Meeting Well Attended!

The Section held its Spring Meeting on Monday, March 24 with over 320 members and apprentices in attendance. President Doug White welcomed everyone to Eagle Eye Golf Club. He also welcomed special guests Bob Baldassari, PGA, Director Youth Golf Development, Frank Chieppa, PGA, Player Development Regional Mgr, Gilles Gagnon, PGA, Director of Golf Operations at Casa de Campo, Brent Kerstetter, Stanford Financial Services, Tim Marks, PGA, Employment Services Consultant and Chad Seymour, PGA, District 5 Director.

President White gave a brief recap of the recently attended Super Regional Meeting the officers and Kevin Helm attended. He also spoke about how the Drive, Chip and Putt Championship has expanded to Michigan, and the new pro am site, Casa de Campo. The Section is very excited to once again host the 2014 Senior PGA Championship.

Vice President Ron Osborne, along with Executive Director Kevin Helm, reviewed year end financials. Brent Kerstetter reviewed the Section’s investments.

Secretary Kevin McKinley explained the MSR requirements needed by June 15, 2015, and acknowledged and welcomed new members and quarter century members.

Guest speaker Tim Marks gave a brief statistical overview of consultations and resume critiquing he gave through the winter with Section Members. He also urged those that have not completed the compensation survey to do so. Frank Chieppa and Bob Baldassari spoke about growing the game of golf through strategic initiatives and National programming.  Former MSU grad Gilles Gagnon showed a brief slide presentation about the Section’s new travel pro am in November, Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic.

As part of the Patriot Golf Day report, Chair Kevin McKinley introduced a Folds of Honor Scholarship recipient Rebecca Braxton, whose father was wounded while serving our country.

A luncheon was sponsored by WhosaleGRIPS.com. Attendees had a chance to see some of what WholesaleGRIPS has to offer.

The afternoon education seminar consisted of past Michigan PGA Merchandisers of the Year Doug Brody, PGA, Adrian Jolliffe, PGA and JP Westbrook, PGA, discussing skills in planning and promotion of sales by presenting products on a timely basis, and the use of specialized merchandising techniques that include display and advertising.

The second portion of the seminar featured Frank Chieppa and Bob Baldassari talking about Growth of the Game Best Practices, overcoming barriers and all of the programs offered through the PGA.

Over 110 Michigan PGA members were in attendance for the afternoon session.
